This grand antique Victorian Albert chain is made up of chunky links, some faceted, others engraved with a star pattern along the sides. Larger, interlocking fetter links are also distributed in between, with scalloped edges, pierced workmanship and further star motifs down the sides. They’re all fashioned in 9ct gold which has developed a pleasing patina and rosy-gold hue with age.

Albert chains were named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

This is an exceptional antique Victorian Albert chain, dating to the late 1800s and is complete with its original claw clasps and a T-bar dropper at the bottom, so it can be worn as a necklace or as a traditional Albert.
